Why and how butterflies display different color patterns on different wings, surfaces, and sexes
Butterfly wing colors have evolved under natural and sexual selection. This talk explores how distinct patterns on dorsal/ventral surfaces, forewings/hindwings, and in males/females balance predator avoidance with mate attraction — and the genetic and developmental mechanisms butterflies use to achieve this.
Antonia Monteiro is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore and has been researching the evolution and development of butterfly wing patterns for over 30 years.
